How to Measure
At The Online Window Store, we want to ensure that your window replacement or new construction project proceeds smoothly. Accurate measurements are crucial for ordering windows that fit perfectly. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you measure your window openings correctly:
Tools You’ll Need:
Tape Measure: A reliable tape measure is essential for accurate measurements.
Notepad and Pencil (or Digital Device): Use a notepad and pencil or a digital device to record measurements. This helps prevent errors and keeps your measurements organized.
Ladder: If your window is positioned high and challenging to reach comfortably, a ladder will come in handy.
Assistant (Optional): Having a helper can save time, especially when using a ladder or taking measurements from multiple angles.
Step 1: Measure the Width
The width of your window opening is a critical measurement. To obtain an accurate width measurement:
- Identify the window jambs, which are the vertical sides of the window frame.
- Measure the width from jamb to jamb at three different points: the top, middle, and bottom of the window opening.
- If you’re replacing old windows, measure directly to the jamb, ignoring any trim strips in your old window opening.
- Record all three measurements and use the smallest of these three measurements when ordering your windows.
Step 2: Measure the Height
Measuring the height correctly is equally important. To measure the height:
- Locate the window sills, which are the horizontal pieces at the top and bottom of the window frame.
- Measure the height from sill to sill, taking three measurements: one at the left side, one at the center, and one at the right side of the window opening.
- As with width, if you’re replacing old windows, measure directly to the sill, disregarding any trim strips.
- Record all three height measurements and use the smallest measurement when placing your window order.
Step 3: Measure the Depth
The depth measurement ensures your new windows fit snugly within the window opening. To measure the depth:
- Measure from the front of the jamb to the window on each side.
- Take the same depth measurement from the sills at the top and bottom of the window opening.
- If you’re ordering vinyl replacement windows, don’t include pulleys or trim strips in your depth measurement. These will be removed during installation.
Step 4: Calculate Your Window Size for Ordering
When ordering your windows, make the following deductions from your rough opening measurements:
- Deduct 1/2-inch from the overall width.
- Deduct 1/2-inch from the overall height.
These deductions ensure that the new windows fit comfortably within the rough opening and provide you with the necessary space to level and square the new windows during installation.
By following these measurement guidelines meticulously, you’ll be well-prepared to order windows that fit precisely and contribute to the success of your project.
